100 Percent Zero Deforestation Timber

Unlike commercial lumber sourcing that contributes to natural forest logging, all timber used across our collections is 100 percent zero deforestation solid Indian mango wood (Mangifera indica).

Our wood enters the furniture crafting process through a circular agricultural forestry cycle:

  • Agricultural Fruit Farming Byproduct: Mango trees are cultivated primarily for their organic fruit harvests over a 15 to 20 year peak lifespan.
  • Responsible Orchard Clearance: As trees mature and fruit yields naturally decrease, orchard farmers harvest older trees to make space for new saplings.
  • Secondary Life in Luxury Design: By repurposing retired fruit trees, we give dense hardwood timber a second life in modern interiors without disturbing wild forest ecosystems.
  • Supplementary Income for Farmers: Purchasing timber directly from local agricultural orchards provides farming communities in India with essential recurring income.

Eco Friendly Seasoning and Non Toxic Protection

Material integrity and environmental health guide every step of our workshop preparation:

  • Computer Monitored Kiln Seasoning: Solid wood boards are dried in specialized kiln chambers down to an 8 to 12 percent moisture equilibrium, ensuring stability across changing US home climates without chemical additives.
  • Non Toxic Biflex Pest Protection: Timber undergoes an eco-friendly protective treatment using Biflex, a responsible pest control process that guards against decay without relying on harsh chemical sprays.
  • Natural Wax Finishes: Exposed solid mango wood legs and frame trims receive hand rubbed natural beeswax polish, nourishing wood fibers while keeping indoor air free of synthetic VOC fumes.

Our Three Pillars Of Sustainable Craftsmanship

We operate a workshop-to-customer-door sustainability model that gives us complete visibility over environmental impact, ethical sourcing, carbon efficiency, and waste reduction. This is achieved by combining our independent British design vision with the world-class governance of our global manufacturing partners.

Core Pillar
Our Practical Approach
Our Practical Approach
Material Science
Core Pillar / Practical Approach: We use 100 percent solid mango wood harvested only after the fruit-bearing life cycle ends. We use zero MDF or synthetic veneers, and all timber is Vriksh certified for full traceability.

Benefit: This repurposes material that would otherwise be discarded, acts as a natural carbon reservoir, and ensures your furniture remains organic and non-toxic.

Engineering Innovation
Core Pillar / Practical Approach: We utilize knockdown designs to pack furniture tightly. We ship solely via full container ocean freight and partner with local couriers focused on low-emission routing.

Benefit: This drastically reduces transit damage, freight volume, and total carbon emissions while ensuring our logistics remain efficient and responsible.

Plastic Free Packaging
Core Pillar / Practical Approach: We are replacing all polymers and polystyrene with molded fiber pulp and starch foams. We absorb the extra costs of these premium materials entirely.

Benefit: You receive packaging that is entirely plastic-free and eco-friendly, without paying a higher price for making an environmentally responsible choice.

Ethical Craftsmanship and Fair Trade Operations

Our commitment to sustainability extends directly to the master woodworkers and craftspeople who build our furniture. We work directly with artisan workshops in Jaipur and Rajasthan operating under SMETA audited fair trade labor standards:

  • Fair Living Wages: Skilled woodworkers earn compensation well above regional averages, offering long term financial stability for artisan families.
  • Safe and Ergonomic Workspaces: Workshops feature modern dust extraction systems, proper natural lighting, personal protective equipment, and healthy working environments.
  • Preserving Heritage Woodcraft: We support traditional crafting methods such as hand carved mortise and tenon joinery, lathe spindle turning, and hand planed finishing, ensuring centuries old trade skills thrive across generations.

Preserving Your Investment

Our mission is to manufacture quality furniture that lasts for generations, bypassing fleeting consumer trends. Because solid wood remains an active, living material, it will naturally respond to the shifting humidity and heating temperatures of your home.

To maintain the deep lustre and natural beauty of your timber, we recommend regular dusting with microfiber cloths and occasional light waxing with clear, natural beeswax. Additionally, all textiles used across our upholstery lines are strictly fire retardant, ensuring complete safety and peace of mind in your home.

By blending centuries old traditional construction methods with modern design frameworks, we deliver heirloom quality pieces that honour the human artistry of our craftsmen.

Tree a Day Reforestation Initiative

In partnership with international environmental restoration programs, our Tree a Day initiative ensures that every purchase actively gives back to global reforestation. A new tree is planted daily to restore natural habitats, absorb atmospheric carbon, and foster biodiversity.

We also advance plastic free packaging initiatives across our global logistics network, reducing single use plastics across transit and fulfillment operations from our New Jersey and California hubs.

Our Sustainability Promise to You

We believe that furniture should be built to endure for generations without compromising the natural world. From zero deforestation orchard sourcing to fair trade artisan workshops and nationwide white glove fulfillment, Leather & Down delivers sustainable luxury you can feel proud to bring into your home.

The Natural Character Disclaimer & Care Philosophy

A Living Material: Our Furniture Care Philosophy

Because our furniture is crafted from genuine, solid wood rather than synthetic composite materials, each piece remains a living, breathing design element. As the seasons change, the lumber naturally responds to subtle shifts in your home’s temperature and humidity. Far from an imperfection, this gentle movement and the distinct variations in grain are the celebrated hallmarks of authentic, natural craftsmanship.

To preserve the rich luster, distinct character, and structural integrity of your piece for generations, keep it away from prolonged direct heat and intense sunlight. Periodically treating the grain with a clear, natural beeswax will deeply nourish the wood fibers and protect its timeless quality.
